Tiffany Houghton on Her Emotional New Single '17 Again,' Life in Los Angeles, and Nick Jonas

Fans of Tiffany Houghton probably know her as the bubbly pop singer with the sugary sweet voice and adorable '50s-inspired style. But as the 20-year-old rising star proves in her latest music video for her acoustic single "17 Again," which was inspired by the "Moon River" balcony scene in Breakfast at Tiffany's, she's not afraid to lay her emotions on the table. This fearlessness, the Texas native says, is simply part of a desire to make her fans "feel like they're along for the journey."
For Houghton, the journey has included moving to Nashville when she was 18 and perfecting a sound that combines Taylor Swift's country sweetness and storytelling with Katy Perry's pop-rock edge. Two years later, with dozens of self-produced singles and music videos under her belt (including the infectious "Love Like That" and "High") and plenty of new music on the way, there clearly is no slowing down this budding star.
We caught up with the Los Angeles-based Houghton to chat about the inspiration for "17 Again," her appreciation of decades long gone, and her love of all things Nick Jonas.

Zimbio: What does your acoustic single "17 Again" mean to you?
Houghton: It's a song I wrote when I was in the process of moving to Nashville. I graduated high school early and moved there right after I turned 18. I left my school, my boyfriend, and my family — it was the hardest thing in the entire world to move away. I got homesick. But I felt this shift in who I was and what I needed to do. One night I sat down and cried because I didn't want to be strong anymore. I wrote all of these lyrics to "17 Again." It's about leaving my boyfriend, my innocence, stability, and my safety net.

Zimbio: What is it about "17 Again" that may or may not surprise your fans?
Houghton: It definitely shows a different side of me and my artistry. Everything is usually well-produced and polished. My fans really reacted to the rawness and vulnerability of a homemade video I put out called "Phone Call." I was like, if my fans are liking this, why not show them this other music I have, even when it's not fully produced, to help them feel like they're along for the journey.

Zimbio: You use the lovely "Moon River" balcony scene from Audrey Hepburn's Breakfast at Tiffany's as inspiration for the music video. What's the story behind that?
Houghton:  It's my favorite scene. I love that vulnerability. In the movie, she [Hepburn's character] is running away from things all of the time. But she's a wild thing and is in search for stability — as we all are. This scene is the one moment where she was the most vulnerable. "17 Again" is very much a similar story.

Zimbio: What is it about the '50s and '60s that you love?
Houghton: "Innocence is bliss" is probably my sum up statement for the reason I love that time period, especially as I get older and have more grown-up life experiences. I love to allude to time periods I've never lived in, but I also think there was a different attitude back then. Everything had a price you had to pay. There wasn't shortcuts or instant gratification. At the end there was a real world. I just love that.

Zimbio: You needed to be brave in order to pack your bags for Nashville and leave your life behind. Where does this courage come from?
Houghton: Growing up my mom and dad would always tell me that Houghtons can do hard things. It almost brainwashed me into believing it. My parents were married at 18 and had no money, but so many dreams. They moved to Dallas, a place where they didn't know anyone, and figured things out for themselves. I really look up to that. I want to be that type of person that risks everything.

Zimbio: You're based in Los Angeles now, but lived in Nashville for two years before that. Why did you decide to switch coasts?
Houghton: I feel like I had to go to Nashville to figure out how to write songs — it's an incredible town for songwriting. My inspirations are Shania Twain, Sara Bareilles, Michelle Branch, Avril Lavigne, Taylor Swift, and Katy Perry. A common thing with these artists is that they write their own songs and have a story to tell. They spent so long working on their artistry and figuring out who they were in order to share that with the world. So, for two years in Nashville, I really figured out who I wanted to be as an artist. Once I felt I had that figured out, it was time to move to L.A. because I want to be a pop artist.

Zimbio: You said Nashville taught you a lot about songwriting. What exactly did you learn?
Houghton: It taught me the importance of knowing your own voice and knowing how you say and portray certain things. Being able to talk to people and have them listen to you is a really big deal and I don't take that lightly.

Zimbio: You have released a ton of songs and music videos. Is there a debut album in the works?
Houghton: This is the year of putting out soooo much music. I have so many songs in my journal and have a vision for each song. I want each of them to have their own life because I think they deserve that. I'm putting out singles with music videos for the rest of the year. Some will be full-on produced, some will be a bit more vulnerable like "17 Again."

Zimbio: Since the release of "High," which has over a million plays on VEVO, how have things changed?
Houghton: That was the first song I put out where I was totally confident in who I was — that was a really big deal. I put out something that I didn't have any apologies for. I had no hesitation. It was me. Also, a lot more people started taking me seriously. Honestly, when you have confidence that alone will open doors for you.

Zimbio: This is a bit random, but you're always seem to have cupcakes, cookies, and lollipops in your music videos. Is there a reason for that?
Houghton: Honestly, I think growing up my mom, who is an interior decorator, decorated the house with food. She would have cake desserts and cinnamon rolls and decorate with them. I dunno why, but it definitely comes from my mom.

Zimbio: When you're not in the studio, what are you up to these days?
Houghton: I'm out on a college and high school tour. At high schools I'm singing for students and talking to them about my journey and what it's like to pursue a music career. I'm so excited about that. In my high school, I remember Kristin Chenoweth came and I swear to you it changed my life. She had the most amazing things to say to us. And, oh gosh, I can't even compare myself to her, but to have the same kind of opportunity to talk to kids, tell them about my journey, and try to help them is just cool. I'm having a lot of fun with that.

Zimbio: What is your dream collaboration?
Houghton: I would love to write a song with Shania Twain, but I would love to do a duet with Nick Jonas [laughs]. I love him soooo much it's not even funny. I'm obsessed! The Jonas Brothers were huge when I was in school, and, oh my gosh — I was so in love.

Zimbio: Have you ever met Nick Jonas?
Houghton: I see him all the time in L.A. We're usually driving and I'll pull over and he's pulled up next to me. It's a total fan girl moment every single time. One time, I kind of met him from afar. He knew the friend I was with. I don't know if he actually knows who I am — well, he probably knows me as some weird fan girl, honestly. But that's okay.

Zimbio: Yeah, that's totally cool. We all have our celebrity crushes.
Houghton: Right? We've all had those moments. I feel like there are two types of fan girls: those that are honest about it and those that deny it. Everyone is a fan girl, it just depends on how honest you are about it.

Mariah Carey – We Belong Together

Mariah Carey – We Belong Together
There's nothing like a remix that brings back to old school memories and we can thank Los Angeles producer, Siik for that. He's reworked everything from Michael Jackson to Beyoncé and Brandy. Now he has himself reworking the well-known classic "We Belong Together" by the one and only Mariah Carey. Like many of his remixes this one still holds its smooth, R&B feel but with a pinch of swag added to it which makes it a perfect remix to bring back them good times.

Kim Kardashian Talks Getting A Shot In The Eye, Leaks Breast Milk In TMI

The Kardashians aren't shy about sharing personal details about their lives, and on the Jan. 26 episode of "Keeping Up with the Kardashians," we learned just a little too much about Kim Kardashian's sex life with Kanye West. While sitting in her mother's home, the 33-year-old new mom complained to her sister Khloe about how she managed to spray hand sanitizer in her eye, however, Khloe didn't have much sympathy for Kim:
"I opened up a bottle of hand sanitizer, and it squirted right in my eye and burned my eye," Kim told her sister.

"Aren't you used to that? When Kanye ..." Khloe asked, as Kim nodded in reference to a bedroom mishap.
Moments later, the conversation turned to Kim's breast, which was leaking milk, and subsequently horrifying her sister and brother Rob, who was also present for the previous conversation.
“What the f--k? That weirds me out. For real," Rob told Kim, while Khloe compared it to a "water fountain."

For her part, Kim seemed unconcerned with her siblings' comments. “It’s only on one side. Interesting," she said as she investigated the situation.

Kansas City County Club Plaza 'Ride Along' Movie Theater Testimony !!! MUST READ !!!

Here's an important confirmation and just a bit of insight on the current state of Kansas City's County Club Plaza according to one AWESOME TKC TIPSTER . . .

"TKC, just wanted to send you a word about last night on the plaza.

Caught the 9:10 showing of Ride Along with a few friends and I have no idea what happened in that movie. You simply couldn't hear a word. Also, they started it late and the half and hour of previews didn't let the movie begin until after 10 which is ridiculous. Before I say anything more, I need to tell you that I'm not a racist and I completely expected that there would be some good-spirited chatter in the movie. Nothing wrong with that . . .

The movie theater was more like chaos and I was tempted to ask for my money back because of the mess. People were on their cell phones, talking to each other across the theater and the movie was the last thing on people's mind. I also want you to know that I attended the movie with my black friends and they said the felt the same way. There were a few minor scuffles and some tough talk but I didn't see any violence thankfully.

But I'll say this. There is no question about it. The plaza needs to bring back their 18 and over policy. It was more like a babysitting event down there. Can't imagine how that movie theater continues to stay open."

To be fair, Ride Along was the #1 movie in the nation this weekend so it's not unheard of for it to be packed across the metro. Still, we start another year with a preview of tension on The Plaza that has not subsided.

You Can Now 3D-Print A Replica Of Your Unborn Child’s Fetus To Commemorate Your Pregnancy

A new company called 3D Babies can turn an ultrasound image of an unborn fetus into a real-life sculpture for the small price of $600. The sculpture comes delivered in a satin-lined wooden box that looks way too much like a small coffin.

You just send the company an ultrasound, which is then used to create an exact physical replica of whatever is hanging out in your stomach. 3D Babies seems to be taking advantage of two dreadful characteristics of the modern young adult: the inability to wait for anything and the overwhelming desire to share every personal development with anyone who cares to notice.

So instead of just showing people pictures of your unborn child, your friends can now share your joy and feel the tender little body that’s inside your womb.
Don’t want children? No problem! You don’t need an ultrasound to order a baby. You can order a custom fetus that comes in three sizes and skin colors: mini, half-size and life-size; and light, medium and dark.
But let’s say you don’t want just any random baby, but quite possibly the most famous infant alive right now.
That’s right, available on the website is a replica of North West, the child of Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. We know you’ve been dreaming of holding this adorable little thing since you saw her picture. The price for young Nori is slated at $250, but we can assume that will go up once Kanye finds out his child is being marketed for the same price as an outdated video game console.

As If Photoshop Couldn’t Get Any Worse, Now They’re Retouching Too-Skinny Models To Look Healthier

According to Leah Hardy, a former editor at Cosmopolitan magazine, the obsession with thinness has gone so far in that direction that models are often too skinny for the shoots they show up to, and photo editors must try to make them look fuller and healthier.

What happened to us? Photoshop used to be our friend. We used it to cover up our booze-filled Facebook pics with cats, and to superimpose pictures of Avicii over our boyfriends’ faces (Oh weird, was that just me?). It was the rich man’s Instagram, the professional filter that allowed us to reclaim just a little control over how our memories are recorded.

But somewhere between Claire Danes’ questionably missing leg and an unrecognizable Kerry Washington, it became Photoshop itself that needed the editing. Society stood all aghast as magazines came forward about removing wrinkles, adding tanner tones and, of course, slimming down their already-fit cover girls. But today, in light of recent admission that Photoshop must now be used to achieve the opposite effect — to bulk up the sickly-skinny who show up for shoots — we’re still left standing with the same dumb, bewildered look on our faces.

Where did it all go wrong? Is this our fault? We have proven unable to stay within a happy medium, and instead pervert Photoshop to both ends of the extremes.
On one hand, Photoshop has been used to distort women’s bodies from beautifully flawed imperfections to uniform testaments of our obsession with Stepford-esque stick figures.
Case in point — Jennifer Lawrence, a perfectly perfect human being who has been an outspoken advocate against body shaming, became a victim of the Photoshop phenomenon when Flare Magazine decided in the editorial stages that her cheekbones had to appear more sunken in and her figure even more hourglass-y. The touch-ups might have been minimal but the message reads loud and clear: Women will continue to be scrutinized for their weight, their shape and their skin. You might be happy with yourself, but society sure isn’t.

Photoshop has proven to be a tool by which the haters can create a false reality for themselves, and for the masses who have sadly grown accustomed to glorifying a nonexistent ideal.
I don’t know if it’s comforting or harrowing to discover that models now — the very genetically gifted whom we females are taught to emulate — have themselves fallen prey to the Photoshop trap. Maybe in seeing the augmented mags, they forgot that the “them” staring up from the pages wasn’t the real “them” to begin with, but rather a concocted (Skinnier! Clearer-skinned!) version based on their original beauty (but after watching this Photoshop time lapse clip, I’m not sure that we need models since robots or inanimate objects would seemingly do the trick).

These models are competing against this manufactured and unreal ideal, losing weight like they have to be literally less-than their Photoshopped selves.

While it’s probably a benefit to impressionable and insecure teenage girls everywhere that magazine editors decided not to glorify these emaciated forms and instead added pounds and curves to their cover photos, it’s disconcerting that even models — people professionally invested in the business of being beautiful — are unable to size up accurately, so to speak, to the expectations of the industry.
If supermodels can’t figure Photoshop out, how can we expect budding women to wade through all this body image bullsh*t?

We do know that when those images surface, we feel a true need to consume and comment. Minutes after Kim Kardashian posted a butt selfie on Instagram (always a good move, I say), followers and media outlets alike were sent into a frenzy, accusing the new mama of “new manipulation” for alleging Photoshopping the post work-out pic.

Image manipulation is a real cause for concern, according to the American Medical Association. AMA Board Member Dr. Barbara McAneny has said that “the appearance of advertisements with extremely altered models can create unrealistic expectations of appropriate body image. In one image, a model’s waist was slimmed so severely, her head appeared to be wider than her waist. We must stop exposing impressionable children and teenagers to advertisements portraying models with body types only attainable with the help of photo editing software.”

Although scientific data directly linking these Photoshopped, false advertisements with the development of eating disorders and other emotional issues are lacking, it doesn’t seem too far-fetched to state that such an unhealthy obsession with looking unhealthy has a negative impact on women today.
The AMA suggested (in 2011, mind you) that editors and advertisers work together with health organizations to create guidelines that prevent Photoshop from being used to propagate unrealistic and only drastically-attainable beauty standards. Needless to say, I don’t think that Vogue gave WHO a call.
But regardless of the preferred solution to our Photoshop pandemic, it’s clear that something has to change. If both the average woman and the seemingly super-human supermodel are failing to meet the Photoshop ideal, then this little tech tool is no longer working in our favor.
